Life Summary

Arnold Cuthbert Lawrie — known as "Cuth" — was born on 22 June 1895 at Telowie, South Australia, the son of John and Elizabeth (née Nunan) Lawrie of Nelshaby, near Port Pirie. He was a compositor in the printing trade and a skilled artisan.

He married Hazel Rose Telfer on 28 June 1924. During the early years of their marriage they lived in Adelaide, but the Great Depression forced them to leave the city and seek work in the country. They moved to Ceduna on the Far West Coast, where Cuth was employed at the gypsum works.

As economic conditions improved, the family left the West Coast and moved to Murray Bridge, where Cuth resumed his trade as a compositor at the Murray Valley Standard newspaper.

He was a keen sportsman — an excellent footballer, cricketer and tennis player. He loved fishing and would travel to Streaky Bay and Smoky Bay where there was an abundance of fish. He would shoot rabbits to help supplement the family's food.

🟡 ⚠️ PARTIAL — death (09 Sep 2026, single book source, not yet confirmed): The Supplement (A Telfer Family Tree, 2008) p.311 records his death: d. 1963, Red Cliffs, Victoria. This fills the year the vault previously held as "Unknown" (Borders ends his bio at Murray Bridge). However this rests on a single book source — no independent VIC/SA death registration or funeral notice located yet — so `death_year` is deliberately not set and 1963 is held as a clearly-labelled partial, not a verified fact. A candidate burial (Find A Grave memorial 211558129, "Arnold Lawrie d. 30 Apr 1963, Nichols Point Cemetery, Mildura") cannot be confirmed as this Arnold — it has no bio/photo/family links tying it to Hazel Rose Telfer's husband — pending a Sunraysia Daily funeral notice or VIC BDM. Upgrade path: VIC death index 1963 / Mildura-region funeral notice.
