✅ Verified correction (09 Sep 2026): Death year corrected from 1974 → 1976. The vault previously held `1974` sourced to "Telfer family records" (unsourced). Two independent source groups agree on 1976: (1) the Find A Grave Mitcham family-plot record (memorial 245338232, Violet Hope Telfer) listing this ancestor as "Herbert Dougal Telfer 1881–1976" among Adam & Margaret's children, and (2) the physical book A Telfer Family Tree (Supplement 2008) p.304 — d. 22 Apr 1976, ashes scattered at the Karrakatta rose garden, Perth WA. Burial-site caveat: the SA Mitcham family monument carries his name, but per the Supplement his physical remains (ashes) were scattered at Karrakatta, Perth — the death year is unaffected by which location held them.

Family Stories

🖊️ Anecdote — as told in From the Borders to the Bush (book pp. 268–269, 325–327): Herb was the travelling one. He went out and managed a big sheep station up at Truro — dry, open, woolshed country where a man had to know his sheep and his water — and he cut a solid, quiet figure in charge there. Later he moved right over to Western Australia and settled at Greenmount, and it was Herb's place that took in his sister Effie after her stroke, and gave her a home for her last years. He was the brother who was there when the family needed a steady hand, on a station and in a house. He died in 1976, the last of the Edgerston sons to leave us.
