John Telfer
Biography
Role: English-born Telfer resident at Newcastleton, Castleton parish — not a proven member of the main line, but documentary evidence that Telfer people crossed the border into Liddesdale
Born: ~1791–1795 — ENGLAND
Died: unknown
Occupation: Shepherd (1851) — previously recorded as a pauper (1841)
Residence: Newcastleton, Castleton parish, Roxburghshire (1841 and 1851)
Sibling: Elisabeth Telfer (b. ~1806, England) — recorded as his sister, housekeeper to his household
⚠️ Not proven to be a relative of the main Telfer line. No baptism, marriage, or testament links this John Telfer to James Telfer (1761–1845) or to any other Castleton Telfer family. He is recorded here because he is a sourced, documented Telfer presence in the parish who was born outside Scotland — the only such person yet identified.
Who he was — the two records
Both records below were purchased from ScotlandsPeople, read, and saved to the vault on 11 Sep 2026.

Why this matters
Two independent census returns, ten years apart, agree that John Telfer was born outside Scotland:
- 1841 — the enumerator ticked him in the column for persons born in England, Ireland, or Foreign Parts, explicitly not the "born in the same county" column that every other person on the page is ticked in.
- 1851 — the enumerator wrote "England" outright, in both his entry and his sister's.
The honest limits of this finding
- ❌ Which county of England is not recorded. The 1851 census records country only, not parish. This is as far as the document reaches.
- ❌ No link to the main line has been established. John and Elisabeth cannot be placed as relatives of James Telfer (1761–1845) or Francis Telfer (1809–1895) on present evidence.
- ✅ What IS established: there was an English-born Telfer presence at Newcastleton in both 1841 and 1851, and the Castleton Old Parish Register — which covers the parish's baptisms from 1697 — does not capture it. This is direct evidence that the parish register is an incomplete record of the Telfer people who lived in the parish.
