Life Summary
Richard Pelling Latter married Esther Farrow — second child of Charles Farrow and Elizabeth Hannah Telfer — on 2 March 1882 at Finniss Point, South Australia. They settled at Mannum on the River Murray and raised three children: Ida Jane, Daisy Vera, and Kenneth Harry.
Richard worked for James Martin & Co. of Gawler, the colony's celebrated farm-machinery makers. He packed a shipment of harvesters for Argentina and travelled with them, staying on to assemble and trial the machines for Argentine farmers — his letters home from Buenos Aires (November–December 1903) survive in the family.
He was a pillar of Mannum civic life for decades: a long-serving committee member of the Mannum Institute, Captain of the Mannum Defence Rifle Club (repeatedly re-elected through 1910–1914), and a member of local progress and church committees. Newspaper accounts of the era repeatedly name him — presiding at club socials, seconding motions at Institute meetings, and helping erect the fair stalls.
(Richard's death is dated 15 June 1936 at Mannum by the Mannum Institute descendant report and the family book. Note his widow Esther's death — see Notes on her profile — is settled at 31 October 1951.)
