John Watson was born in Hobart, Tasmania in 1851. He married Mary Jane Paynter, daughter of Jean Telfer (1840–1892) and Richard Paynter, on 1 March 1882 at Arkaba, South Australia — the marriage place recorded as "Home of Mr Mapleton".

He and Mary Jane had at least two sons recorded in the Telfer family books: Joseph Watson (1883–1948) and Lancelot Hobart Watson (1888–1960). He died at Brunswick, Victoria on 10 September 1929.

✅ Death-detail hardening, 20 Oct 2026 — registration located. The 1929 Brunswick detail no longer rests on the family books alone. Victorian BDM historical death index, registration 8482/1929: WATSON, John — died BRUNSWICK EAST, Victoria, registered 1929, age at death 78, father WATSON John, mother's family name at birth GRANT. Age 78 against 1929 gives a birth year of 1851, agreeing with this profile. He is the only John Watson in the Victorian 1929 deaths of that age — the only other is a John Watson who died at Stratford, aged 72, a different man. The register was searched for deaths 1928–1930 (6 records) and again for 1929 alone (2 records); nothing else fits.
What the index does NOT confirm, and what remains open. Two things are worth naming plainly rather than smoothing over:

The index records no age-indexed match to a named spouse, so it does not itself link this death to Mary Jane Paynter. The link is inference from age, place and the family books, and while strong, it is inference.

The index gives his parents as John Watson and (—) Grant. The vault has never recorded parents for this John Watson — a search of the whole vault for "James Watson" and "Birch" returns zero results, so no competing parentage exists here to conflict with. That the father was also named John is consistent with the family's repeated given-name pattern and with the "Hobart" middle names carried down, but it is not proof, and the mother's name (Grant) is new information not yet corroborated by any second source.

No Find A Grave memorial exists for him at Fawkner, which is consistent with a cremation and no headstone rather than a missing record.

Next step if this matters: the $20 uncertified Victorian death certificate (8482/1929) would name spouse, children and informant, and would settle the Paynter link and the Grant question at once. That is a spending decision, not a research dead end — flagged, not assumed.

The family's "Hobart" middle names (carried by Lancelot and later his son John Hobart Watson) preserve their Tasmanian origins. John Watson died at Brunswick, Victoria on 10 September 1929.
