  • Primary — Victorian BDM historical death index (free online index, live-read 20 Oct 2026): registration 6694/1945 — WATSON, Mary Jane; event death; place PRESTON; age at death 84; place of birth PORT LINCOLN, SOUTH AUSTRALIA; father PAYNTER Unknown; mother's family name at birth FLAVELL. Every field agrees with this profile: age 84 against a 1861 birth; Preston as place of death; Paynter as her father; and FLAVELL is her maternal line — her mother Jean Telfer was a daughter of Dinah Flavel (1821–1844). This resolves the note above: an independent primary index has now been located and matches.
  • Primary — Genealogy SA marriage index (live-read 20 Oct 2026): WATSON, John / (bride's surname members-only) Mary Jane, district Frome, book/page 130/959, marriage year 1882. Arkaba lies in the Hundred/District of Frome, and this is the only John Watson marriage in that district in 1882 — corroborating the 1 March 1882 marriage.

  • Note on the FLAVELL field: a death record's "mother's family name at birth" is supplied by the informant and can name a grandmother rather than the mother when the mother's own maiden name is uncertain. Here it is consistent either way — Jean Telfer's mother was Dinah Flavel — so the field corroborates the maternal line without altering it.
