Thirza Paynter was the fifth child of Richard Paynter and Jean Telfer, born at St Kitts Creek (between Kapunda and Truro) on 3 July 1867.

Her father died of pleurisy on 7 February 1869, aged 30, leaving the family unprovided for. Thirza followed him six weeks later, dying at Finniss Point on 22 March 1869. An in memoriam notice was placed in a local newspaper.

Her mother Jean was pregnant at the time with the family's last child, Dinah Flavel Paynter, who was born at Finniss Point on 18 July 1869 — five months after her father's death.
