Olive married into the Piper family of South Australia, a family with a striking rise from modest English origins to the upper ranks of the colonial legal world.

Her father-in-law, Arthur William Piper (1865–1936), was born in Kent, England, the son of Thomas Piper (1835–1928), a Bible Christian minister who came out to Adelaide in 1870. Arthur won a scholarship to Prince Alfred College, was admitted to the Bar at just 21 (1886), became King's Counsel in 1911, and was appointed a Justice of the Supreme Court of South Australia in 1927. The ADB praises him as "a prodigious worker," erudite enough to handle any case with ease.

He was a Federationist — an official guest at the 1901 Federation ceremonies in both Melbourne and Sydney — a Grand Master of the Freemasons of South Australia (1919–1924), and he drafted the constitution of the forerunner to the modern Liberal Party. He died in 1936 and, like Olive, is buried at Mitcham Cemetery.
