Ruth Penna married George Wright Telfer (1850–1913), son of Francis Telfer and Margaret Wright, on 17 September 1884. She was the daughter of William and Ruth Penna, market gardeners from Kersbrook. Together they had three children who survived infancy: William Francis (Frank, b. 1885), Lesley Thomas (b. 1891), and Olive Netta (b. 1894); a fourth, Olive Millie, died in infancy in 1890. The family moved to Western Australia in 1896, where George ran the City Steam Laundry in Perth. Ruth died in 1908 (From the Borders to the Bush: "1908 was a hard year. Ruth died, leaving George with three children to raise"). George survived her until 1913.
