The Voyage That Took Everything
Jean Murray married Francis Telfer around 1831 in Eskdalemuir, in the Scottish Borders. They had three children — James, Esther and Elizabeth — all born in Scotland and Skye. In September 1838, the young family boarded the Prince George in London, bound for South Australia.
The voyage took about 14 weeks. During the journey, Jean gave birth to a fourth child, a boy they named John. The baby didn't survive the voyage.
They arrived at Port Adelaide on 26 December 1838 after a hellish three and a half months at sea. Jean was frail from childbirth and the conditions on board. She never recovered. Just 27 days after stepping onto Australian soil, she died at the Emigration Depot in Adelaide on 22 January 1839. She was about 28 years old.
Francis was left a widower with three children under the age of seven in a new country, with no wife and no family nearby. He eventually remarried Margaret Wright, who became the mother of John Telfer (1847–1929) and the rest of that branch.
