The First Name in the House

Hugh came first — the eldest son David and Isabella gave the name of David's own father, Hugh Parker of Ayrshire. But this boy only lived to about two, dying in December 1861 on the family farm country near Peachy Belt. Rather than lose the name, the family gave it again to a son born three Octobers later, in 1864 — the practice of the time. Two short-lived boys, one much-loved name, passed down twice in a row.

Hugh died on 13 December 1861, aged about 2, in the Peachy Belt area of South Australia — not long after his mother Isabella, born to the family near Virginia and Two Wells in the Adelaide Plains district. His death record is registered in the Port Gawler district. After his death, the family gave the name Hugh again to a son born in 1864.

This Hugh Parker is distinct from his brother Hugh Parker (1864–1891), born after this child's death. Both sons were named after David Parker's father, Hugh Parker.
