The First Name in the House

Hugh came first — the eldest son David and Isabella gave the name of David's own father, Hugh Parker of Ayrshire. But this boy only lived to about two, dying in December 1861 on the family farm country near Peachy Belt. Rather than lose the name, the family gave it again to a son born three Octobers later, in 1864 — the practice of the time. Two short-lived boys, one much-loved name, passed down twice in a row.

Hugh Parker was born in November 1859 at Virginia, South Australia, the son of David Parker (1822–1888) and Isabella Kelly (c. 1825–1867). He was the first son his father named Hugh, in honour of David's own father Hugh Parker.

Hugh died on 13 December 1861, aged about 2, in the Peachy Belt area of South Australia — not long after his mother Isabella, born to the family near Virginia and Two Wells in the Adelaide Plains district. His death record is registered in the Port Gawler district. After his death, the family gave the name Hugh again to a son born in 1864.

Note on Name

This Hugh Parker is distinct from his brother Hugh Parker (1864–1891), born after this child's death. Both sons were named after David Parker's father, Hugh Parker.

(1) The South Australian civil death registration was read live in the Genealogy SA members' index: `PARKER, Hugh`, died 13-Dec-1861, age 2, male, father David PARKER, district Port Gawler, Book/Page 14/144 — the registration names the father outright, which is primary evidence of the link (previously this was only cited on WikiTree and therefore unread). (2) FindAGrave memorial 202084822 independently records the death date 13 Dec 1861 at Two Wells Cemetery, exact-match. WikiTree supplies the corroborating compiled version.
