Family Stories

🖊️ Anecdote — as told in From the Borders to the Bush (book pp. 325–327): Effie — talk about courage. She went nursing out west with her sister Lill, and she married a tough Scotsman, Robert Wilson, who'd survived a gold-mine cave-in and made his living as a boiler-maker and a seaman — a walking tall tale himself. They had one precious daughter, Mona, born in 1921. Then, at the age of thirty-eight, Effie had a stroke that took her whole right side. It should have finished her. But Mona nursed her, her sister Lill came across to help her re-learn, and the day came when Effie wrote and spoke again — with her left hand. She went to live out the rest of her years with her brother Herb at Greenmount in Western Australia, and she lived them well, to eighty-three. That's Effie: a stroke at thirty-eight, and she beat it.
