Family Stories
Clarice May — known as May — was the eldest daughter of Francis Charles and Amy Telfer. She contributed a first-hand account of her father's pioneering life to the family history. She recalled how he drove his horses and wagon down from Hawker to the Eyre Peninsula to take up land, and described the gruelling childhood she and her siblings endured: walking three and a half miles to school each day, then coming home to feed hay into the chaff cutter by lantern light — "the prickles and mice it contained was not funny" — bagging up ten to twelve bags of chaff every night, tending sheep, milking cows, turning the milk separator, and pumping water by hand for the garden.
