Family Stories

Eddie, as he was known, was the seventh child of Francis Charles and Amy Telfer. In June 1987 he wrote a lengthy contribution to the family history, describing his father's journey from Willow Plains to Ungarra in 1906 with horses and wagon, and the back-breaking work of clearing mallee scrub. He recalled family stories with warmth and humour — like the time the family converted a Nash motor car into a horse-drawn buckboard after it broke down, or the gas producer unit fitted to the tractor during the war years that could run on charcoal, allowing them to keep working through fuel shortages. He remembered his father as a great inventor and blacksmith who made a stump-jump plough that worked well in tough conditions. Eddie married twice — first to Lola May Paterson, with whom he had four children including Judith, Miriam, Joy and David, and later to Kayleen Ruth Copping.
