Jean Maryann Martha Telfer was born in 1910, the fourth child of Mark Telfer (1877–1946) and Julia Matilda Seebohm (1876–1939) of Tantanoola, South Australia. She was the eldest daughter.

Jean was named Maryann Martha after her paternal grandmother Martha Henstridge (~1854–1921) and her maternal grandmother — a naming tradition that connects her to both sides of the family.

Family Stories

Jean Maryann Martha Telfer was the fourth child and eldest daughter of Mark Telfer and Julia Matilda Seebohm, born in 1910 at Tantanoola. She never married. For some years she lived and worked at "Pleasant Hill", Glencoe West, the home of her father's cousin, Frank Telfer, and his wife Clara. Jean was a foundation member of the Tantanoola Women's Agricultural Bureau, formed in 1931, and remained active in its work. When her father retired to Millicent, Jean accompanied him, keeping house for him in his later years. She was a highly skilful bowler, both indoor and outdoor. Jean died on 16 September 1984 at the age of 74 and was buried in Tantanoola Cemetery, where her grave is shared with her sister Maifie, the inscription reading: "In Loving Memory of our dear Sisters."
